About IIM Publications
The Institute presently publishes three journals :
1. Transactions of The Indian Institute of Metals
2. Journal of Alloy Phase Equilibria and
3. IIM Metal News
The Transactions of The Indian Institute of Metals was first published in 1948 as an annual publication featuring various research and technical papers. Late Dr. Dara P. Antia was the first editor. The journal remained annual upto 1957 and turned quarterly till 1972. Since 1973 it is being published as bimonthly. The publication of the transactions is managed by a Chief Editor, assisted by Editors and Reviewers. The Journal features high quality of papers not only based on basic research but also on development work emanating from a range of sources extending from educational institutions, R & D laboratories to industrial research. The papers are published under three categories
(i) General Technical paper :- representing technical paper written by a specialist on a topic of general interest
(ii) Technical paper :- representing completed original work consisting of results of extensive field, plant, laboratory and theoretical investigations
(iii) Technical note :- representing prompt publication of a short item dealing with new findings or topics of current interest in the field of research and
(iv) Review paper :- written by authoritative person associated with the subject and giving a comprehensive review of the subject. Over the last nearly three decades, the journal has matured into a publication of international reputation, indexed in Metal Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts and Current Contents
Journal of Phase Eqilibria
The Institute started Journal of Alloy Phase Diagrams from 1983. This is a special journal sponsored by the Tata Iron and Steel Company and was published three times a year. The results of research work done on Alloy Phase Diagrams after being reviewed through category editors coordinated by Dr. T Mukherjee, are published in the journal. Since 1991 this Journal has been merged with the bulletin of Alloy Phase Diagram of ASM International, USA and published as Journal of Phase Eqilibria.
IIM Metal News
With a view to confine the scope of the Transactions to technical matters, a companion quarterly journal, Metal News was started from 1979. The Metal News published articles of general interest both to members and non-members and for general dissemination of metallurgical knowledge among engineering community. In addition, announcements, abstracts of proceedings of important seminars, conferences, workshops, courses, etc. organised by the Institute and its Chapter are also published in the Metal News. The Metal News also provides informations about the activities of various Chapters and Divisions.
ALLOY PHASE DIAGRAMS PROGRAMME
Alloy Phase Diagrams are the most important reference guides for all metallurgists in manufacturing, fabricating, heat treatment or research problems on metals and alloys. Since data on these diagrams is not adequate, a world-wide effort and organisation to generate the data became essential. The Indian Institute of Metals, under the initiative and able guidance of Late Dr. Dara P. Antia undertook to organise and generate finances for this effort in India and participate in the Alloy Phase Diagrams International Commission (APDIC).
The Institute therefore appointed a committee for 'Research on Alloy Phase Diagrams' in 1982. Today, the Alloy Phase Diagrams (APD) work of the IIM is acclaimed as the most important and far reaching effort of the Commission which has members from USA, UK, Germany, Japan, Canada, France etc.
The work in India is financed essentially by the Ministries of Science and Technology, Steel and Mines, Defence, Atomic Energy and Education as well as enteriprises like Tata Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. (TISCO) and Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL).
The work is done through Category Editors and their associates at various centres in India and co-ordinted by Dr. T Mukherjee, Chairman of the APD Committee. There is an an international panel for review of the work done in India. After being reviewed and properly edited the results of the various Category Editors work are published in the Journal of Alloy Phase Diagrams or as monographs.
The work, is divided in many centres and cach Category Editor has a very important Category under his preview. It is the responsibility of the Category Editors-in-Chief (appointed by APPDIC) to see that there is no overlap o work and systems are allotted to the most knowledgeable group of scientists, for study.
The systems being evaluated in India, names of the Category Editors and places where work is done are given below :
|Categories||Category Editor/Editors||Organisation were work is done|
|1||Iron-Ternary Systems||Prof. V. Raghavan||IIT, Delhi|
|2||Iron-Ternary Systems||Dr. V. Ramaswamy||R & D, SAIL, Ranchi|
|3||Iron-Ternary Systems||Dr. T. Mukherjee||TISCO, Jamshedpur|
|4||Nickel-Ternary Systems||Prof, K.P.Gupta||IIT, Kanpur|
|5||Zinc-Ternary Systems||Prof. A.K. Mallik & Prof. N.B. Ballal||IIT, Bombay|
|6||Zine-Ternary Systems||Prof.SurajBhan||IT, BHU, Varanasi|
|7||Cobalt-Ternary Systems||Prof.S.Ranganathan||IISc, Bangalore|
|8||Cobalt-Ternary Systems||Prof. K. SrinivasaRagavan||IIT, Madras|
|9||Zirconium-Ternary Systems||Dr.M.K.Asundi||Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Bombay|

|11||Tantalum Binary Systems||Dr. R. Krishnan||Bhabha Atomic Research Centre Bombay|
|12||Platinum Group Systems||Dr. M.S. ChandrasckHaraiah||Bhabha Atomic Binary Research Centre Bombay|
As indicated above, India is responsible for study of the most important categories. On Iron Ternary Systems, Prof.Raghavan has already authored four Monographs, The first monograph was published jointly be the Indian Institure of Metals and the American Society for Metals. The other three monographs were published by the Indian Institute of Metals.
Alloy Phase Diagrams International Commission (APDIC) APDIC has its headquarters at Materials Park, Ohio, which is the headquarters of ASM. ASM International assists the Category Editors by Providing bibilographic support while APDIC coordinates the International Programmes through its constituent members. Full Members have two representatives on the commission while Associate Members have one representative. Dr. T. Mukerjee represents the Indian Institue of Metals in the commission.
