:: About the November 2006 Event ::
From the First (April 2006) and the Second (May 2006) Circulars, IIM
Members and others in the metallurgical fraternity all over the world
already know that the National Metallurgists’ Day (NMD) and the
Annual Technical Meeting (ATM) celebrations in 2006, the Diamond
Jubilee Year of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), will take place in the
Steel City of Jamshedpur, between 13th and 16th November. NMD-ATM
2006 is being jointly organised by The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)
and Tata Steel Limited. The 2006 celebrations will also include an
International Symposium on "Steels for Automotives" (STATS 2006).
The subject for the international symposium in IIM’s Diamond Jubilee
Year and on the eve of Tata Steel’s centenary (2007) was selected in
view of the staggering growth in the Indian automobile industry.
It is befitting that Jamshedpur is the venue of the NMD-ATM 2006
celebrations, since this is where the story of Indian steel began,
almost one hundred years ago. Jamshedpur forms a part of
Jharkhand State, the capital of which is Ranchi. Jamshedpur is well
connected by road and rail to Ranchi and Kolkata, which is the
nearest metropolitan city. The nearest international airport to
Jamshedpur is Kolkata, from where it is possible to reach
Jamshedpur by rail/road in about 5 hours. Ranchi has a domestic
airport connected to Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. From Ranchi, it is
possible to reach Jamshedpur by road in 2 hours. More information
on Jamshedpur can be obtained by visiting
http://www.jamshedpurlive.com. A CD giving many details regarding
the November 2006 event at Jamshedpur has already been sent to
the Chairmen of all Local Chapters of IIM. The same can also be
access from the official NMD-ATM website (Third Circular).
STATS 2006 will begin on Monday, 13th November at 9:00 hours. All
those delegates who wish to join STATS 2006 will have to be in
Jamshedpur, either by Sunday, 12th November evening or latest by
13th November morning. Whether the delegates arrive in
Jamshedpur/Ranchi/Kolkata by rail/road/ air, special volunteers will
be available at the railway station/airport to guide them to their
respective destinations. If the organisers know where the delegates
will be staying, the registration kits will be handed over latest by
Sunday, 12th November, evening. Since many delegates are
expected to transit between Howrah and Tatanagar, both before and
after NMD-ATM 2006, special bogies/reserved seats have been
arranged in trains, through South Eastern Railway. The details of
