The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), established in 1946 with the objective of promoting the science and practice of metallurgy in India. Over the decades, IIM has grown into a premier professional body, fostering collaboration among industry, academia, and research organizations to advance metallurgical, materials science/engineering and manufacturing engineering. IIM has undertaken various initiatives to support research, fostering interest and deeper knowledge in the field among students.
With this intention, IIM is now launching the Undergraduate Internship initiative: IIM-PRIME (Program for Research Internship in Materials Engineering) to provide research/entrepreneurship exposure and mentorship to aspiring students.

• To provide research exposure to undergraduate students in the fields of metallurgy, materials science/engineering and manufacturing.
• To promote early engagement in innovation/startup in the above fields.
• To inspire students to pursue research/entrepreneurship career in above mentioned domains.
• To bridge the gap between fundamental learning and applied research.
• To encourage interaction between students, faculty, and industry professionals, fostering mentorship and long-term professional networks.

UG Students may apply for the annual Summer Internship program, and a total of 100 students will be selected based on eligibility and the defined selection criteria given below.

The duration of internship is 1-2 Months (minimum of one month and maximum of two months). The fellowship for this internship will be Rs. 7,500, 10,000 and 15,000 per intern for 1, 1.5 and 2 months, respectively.

For 2nd and 3rd year UG studentsof metallurgy, materials science/engineering and manufacturing with the following criteria:

1. The applicant should be a full-time/regular student at the time of application and till the completion of the internship.
2. Applicants should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 to be eligible for the internship.
3. Applicant should identify a faculty mentor at one of the IITs or IISc for their summer internship.
4. The faculty mentor should provide a consent/confirmation of internship supervision on their letterhead or by email, clearly stating the title of the project and duration.
5. The applicant should be able to work full time (minimum one month) for the Internship at the host institution. Part-time/online internship is not allowed.
6. The applicant must give a declaration that they will not be receiving any other external fellowship during this period.
7. The student should be enrolled as a Student Member of IIM, which is free.
8. Fellowship will be paid only after the completion of their internship and on successful submission of the internship report.
9. If the number of applications is high, the selection committee may apply additional criteria to finalize the shortlist.
10. Applicants are responsible for arranging their own boarding and lodging during the internship.

Online Applications through Google Form on the portal should preferably be submitted by 31st March of every year, enabling candidates to avail of the Internship Grant for that year. Offline applications and applications through emails shall not be entertained. After the deadline, no applications shall be accepted.
